Modernization of your legacy systems
Legacy systems are expensive to operate and slow down digitization: New requirements can only be implemented in the historically grown, heterogeneous IT landscape at great expense. But no matter how inflexible legacy systems may be, they are still critical to the business. It is therefore all the more important that the modernization project is carried out in a secure and targeted manner so as not to jeopardize ongoing operations and at the same time achieve the desired efficiency leverage.
Definition: What are legacy systems?
In information technology, the word legacy system refers to an established, but usually obsolete system. In German translation, it can therefore also be referred to as a legacy system.
advantages: Why replacing your legacy systems pays off
Cloud-based, multi-device and multi-platform capable – with technological change, the demands on IT are constantly changing. Modern IT systems must be able to react flexibly to the changes and at the same time be secure, robust and cost-effective to operate. Lay the foundation by renewing your legacy systems:
Flexibility for future requirements
With a more homogeneous and lean IT infrastructure, you create the conditions to be able to react faster to future requirements and thus achieve a competitive advantage.
Preparation for automated end-to-end processes
A modern IT landscape enables companies to increase the dark processing rate. By using BPMN/BRE solutions, you streamline your processes and the latest technologies in input management increase the quality of input data.
Close security gaps
Expiring licenses and support for technologies in your legacy systems create security vulnerabilities that can impact reliable operations.
Reduce operating costs
Maintenance and operation of legacy systems are associated with high costs. Experts are sometimes rare and expensive.
Solve problem of lack of know-how
Legacy systems in the insurance industry, for example, are often still based on Cobol and Assembler technologies. Developers who are still proficient in these programming languages are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
Flexible integration
Integration of external IT services to reduce infrastructure and operating costs
Challenges: What are the challenges in replacing legacy systems
Replacing a legacy system is a complex project that involves costs as well as loss of time and ties up capacities. For this reason, it is all the more important to skilfully avoid typical challenges:
Lack of user acceptance & different priorities
The task of renewing a system often goes to the IT department. This makes it all the more important to involve the users in the business department at an early stage and to get them on board: every introduction of a new technology usually means a change in the existing processes. It is often difficult for users to know what effects the innovations will have and what this will mean for their day-to-day work. As a result, it is difficult to accept possible restrictions on processing competencies while at the same time communicating concrete requirements for necessary individual adjustments and taking a positive view of the innovations.
Connection to surrounding systems
Legacy systems are usually linked to a large number of peripheral systems. When replacing the legacy system, it is important to check at an early stage how the legacy system can communicate with these systems and which data and data structures are required. Are web services available as REST or SOAP interfaces? Are these secured via HTTPS? Or does the communication run via file exchange, e.g. via a drive?
Parallel operation of legacy and new system
When a legacy system is replaced, the old and new systems run in parallel for a while. The modernization project as well as the ongoing maintenance and further development of the legacy system tie up resources.
Data migration
Since new data models are rarely designed in the same way as legacy systems, the transfer of data must always be carefully planned. One of the worst cases when replacing a legacy system is the complete loss of data.
